A Study on Relationship of Stress and Immune Response

Abstract
The purpose fo this study was to identify the relationship of stress and immune
function, and effect fo locus of control as stress mediating factor.
Sample was composed of 64 cancer patient's spouse as stressful situation and 63 minor
surgical patient's spouse as control group.
Data was collected from Oct, 1st., 92 to Jun. 31st, '93 using State anxiety scale by
Spielberger and Locus of control by Rotter. Blood cortisol was analyzed by RIA and T
lymphocyte using CD4 & CD8 and natural killer cell using CD56 & CD 16 was counted by
method of FACS. Collected data was analyzed by SPSS PC+ progarm.
@ES Results as follows:
@EN 1) Cancer patient's spouse was higher than miner surgical patient's spouse in state
anxiety and blood cortisol. It was significant statistically.
2) Cancer patient's spouse was higher than minor surgical patient's spouse in natural killer
cell activity and not significant statistically.
3) Cancer patient's Spouse was higher than minor surgical patient's spouse in natural killer
cell activity and not significant statistically.
4) There was no significant relationship of stress and immune response as much as literature
in general. Further study is needed in another stressful situation
5) Locus of control was not highly influenced upon stress response and immune function.
In conclusion, state anxiety level, blood cortisol and immune response of cancer patient's
spouse were high. So Nursing intervention was needed to reduce stress response including
cancer patients and their spouse. And we needed further study in other stressful situations
